Puppy House Training General Rules
1. Owning a puppy is a big ommitemnt for all family members especially in the 1st few days and weeks
2. Puppy Potty Training is not a race, the key is to prevent mistakes and establish good habits early-dogs are creatures of habit
3. From your dogs point of view there is no right or wrong place to go potty, they feel like going so they just do it. It is our job to clearly communicate and reinforce where is acceptable and where it is not acceptable.
4. Opening your back door every couple of hours to let our puppy ot will not housetrain our puppy. A puppy;s natural instnct is to keep their bedding /sleeping area clean- the potty training outlined below utilizes this knowledge to our advantage.
5. No matter how attentive and deligent you are in the house training proess there is bound to be slip ups. Don't worry about it just ensure that you clean mistakes up thoroughly, including the useof and odor neutralizer to take away any lingering smell.
6. My puppy house training straegy involvesto start with but only so we can allow our puppies greater freedom and much sooner
7. Understand you puppy's capabilities adn berealistic, keep in mindyou are dealing with a very young animal ( only a few weeks old). Young puppies can only hold on for so long before they need to go, they don't have much control early on. As a general rule a puppy can hold on 1 hour for each month of his/her age, plus another hour.
8. This means a puppy thats 2 months old can be expected to hold on for 3 hours and a puppy 3 months old 4 hours at a time
9. Develop a food and water schedule. Each day feed at the same time (never close to bed time) and takeaway your dogs water bowl before you go to bed Don't forget to put back first thing in the morning. You'll delvelop a routine this way and "what goes in on schedule comes out on schedule", if you

Puppy House Training Step by Step Process
Teach Your Puppy to "Ask" to Go Outside
If you aren't able to install a doggy door it is handy you teach your puppy right away to let you know he wants to go outside. Do this by hanging a bell on piece of string attached to the door knob or wire to bottom hinge at the level of your puppies nose.
1. Follow the puppy house training schedule as detailed above and now add the following: Each time you get to the door to go outise give the bell a it of a shake and say "go pott". Do this everytime you tka your puppy outside to potty for a week or 2.
2. After a week or so when you arrive at thedoor say "go potty" but don't touch the bell. You want your puppy to give it a nudge, if he does give lots of enthusiastic praise and quickly open the door. If your puppy doesn't nudge the bell after standing at the door for 10seconds. shake the bell yourself while saying "go potty"
3. Keep trying this procedure everytime you go outside until your puppy "gets it". With most dogs it doesn't tkae long at all.
4. Eventally your dog will make his way to the door and tap the bell every time he needs to go outside to go potty.
Doggie Area:
I prefer to use a comfortable safe crate and the right dimensions for your puppy - or - you can set up up a small area with a comfortable dog bed, fresh water and food ( until old enought to withhold) and a couple of soft chew toys like a stuff toys. Put a washable pad accidents and over night.
1. Choose the spot (outside or in your house where pad will be )- where you would like your puppy to eliminate.
2. Keep your puppy in his /her crate, pen area or even thethered to a chair where you are working. Your puppy cannot have free run of the house at this early stage, he must be confined. Every 60 minutes take the puppy straight to the designated area either outside or inside. Carry your puppy or walk on a leash. When you reach the area walk back and forth or circle around and around. At the same time say and repeat the cue word you like to attch to the acto fo the dog eliminating. I use "potty" but just pick out a cue word and stick with it. In you dogs mind you are buidling an association between the cue "potty" and him emptying out. This is the first obidence comman you will tach your young pup.
3. If your pup does elimate continue to repeat your cue ward and instant finished doing his business enthusiastically praise and reward him with a small tasty treat ( I like sweet Cherrios) Make it clear that your are very ahppy with hi and that he is the best little puppy on the block! If after 3-4 minutes of circling around your puppy shows no signs of needing to elminate take him back inside (putting in his crate or area) and try again in about 20 minutes.
4. Immediately after a successful elimating trip outside you can allow your puppy some free play time (under supervision) in the house. Just spend some time enjoying the company of your puppy, ususally 30 minutes , then place him back in this crate or pen area.
5. Continue with teh 60 minute puppy house training schedule, you'llbe rewarded for sticking to it. Remember that you are trying to Prevent any mistakes and at the same time establish good habits in your little puppy.
6. What about overnight? Yes well, firstly do not feed your puppy close to bedtime and take away his water before you go to bed (don't forget to put it back in the morning). You'll need to set your alarm to go off once or twice during the night. This is an important step, just tacke your puppy out or to the area as usual and then hop back in bed. When your puppy is young it is physcially impossible for him to hold on all night, but before long you will both be sleeping peacefully right through the night. If your not willing to get up at ight provide the puppy with a washable pee pad.
In addison to your 60 minute schedule it is important to take your puppy outside after each time meal time. Most puppies go potty within 15 minutes of eating.
That's the puppy's house training process, follow it consistently and I'm sure you'll experience pleaseing results When your not at home you will need to set up their area with comfortable bedding, water, toys, and a place to go potty. Place the pad or commerical type potty at the opposite side of the bedding in the puppies living area. When you arrrive home remove the potty pad and follow the potty training detailed above. Note: DO NOT USE PLASTIC PAPER PADS - BUY THE CLOTH WASHABLE. Puppies can eat them and if not caught in time will compact in the bowls and lead to death -
